Requirements & Experience

a. Must have a Bachelors of Science or equivalent: preferably in bio-chemistry or
related field; including biology, microbiology, chemistry or related fields of study; or
equivalent experience
b. Three to four year’s lab or chemistry experience;
c. Experience supervising/managing employees or providing work direction a plus.
d. Knowledge of fermentation a plus

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities:

a. Directly supervises/manage laboratory technicians
b. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and
applicable laws
c. Assists with interviewing, hiring, and training plant employees; planning, assigning,
and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and
addressing complaints and resolving problems.
d. Keeps up with new laboratory products that maximize testing results; sets up
purchase orders with vendors;
e. Set and manage staffing levels in the lab to cover all operating hours including
weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties.

a. Manages and supervises laboratory technicians; provides direction on projects
and tasks, evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel
actions; provides training, and motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and
performance;
b. Supervises day-to-day laboratory activities; routinely inspects the laboratory
equipment and reports problems or concerns;
c. Tests chemical samples to determine their make-up and properties and advises on
alternative production methods;
d. Ensures that all laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and test results are
accurate. Monitor daily QC checks.
e. Researches new chemical and biochemical processes; documents research
findings and provides quarterly analysis of possible chemical applications/alternatives;
f. Periodically tests incoming raw materials for adherence to specifications.
g. Ensures that all products adhere to specifications and are in compliance with
established quality criteria.
h. Identifies opportunities to improve production through testing and experimenting;
prepares equipment, products and material for experiments and surveys; records
findings;
i. Manages supplies, tracks inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate
supplies are available;
j. Ensures compliance with state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations, and
adherence to quality assurance programs and safety standards;
k. Coordinates with laboratory technicians and other plant department managers to
optimize plant operations so that facility goals are maximized within the parameters of
company standards;
l. Participates in the development, and the administration of annual operating plans and
fiscal budgets;
m. Develops, implements, and enforces safety programs to promote a safe cautious
environment and to minimize safety hazards/injuries;
n. Communicates regularly with the Plant Manager to keep him/her informed of
chemical research, testing results, and off spec products.
o. Manages chemical inventory
p. Assist in safety management
q. Communicate between different plants to help troubleshoot plant problems
r. Conduct bench top fermentation evaluations and testing
s. Perform preventative maintenance on lab equipment
t. Offsite tests - researching new technologies, ASTM compliance & customer quality
checks
u. Prepare paperwork for hazardous shipments to DOT regulations
v. Perform ASTM compliance
w. Review and update lab SOPs annually. Implement new SOPs as needed.
